TANIA CHOI

“Papa!”

My voice lowered in gravity.

“Yes?” His eyes twinkled.

“It’s not right,” I said emphatically.

“What the teachers are doing in school is not right.”

Born and raised in Singapore, Tania Choi came to the USA at the age 18 to attend college. Her place at Brown University was secured by her admission essay about seeking “educational asylum” from her previous traumatic educational experiences. Her journey through gaining four degrees in top American institutions revealed the residual trauma of surviving the Singapore System. Her love-hate relationship with a country that was responsible for both her success and ongoing trauma, and her struggle to overcome the social imprinting that made each subsequent degree seem not yet enough, finally culminated in a career as a psychotherapist. Her understanding of being straddled between two cultures has made her a unique counselor for those undergoing assimilation struggles, as well as a critic of educational systems that are responsible not only for success, but for untold suffering.
